History of ‘De Nonnerie’

Lunchroom ‘De Nonnerie’ is situated underneath what was once the chapter hall of the St. Agatha convent of the female Third Order of St. Francis. After the convent’s dissolution, the mediaeval complex, now called the ‘Prinsenhof’, served many purposes, some glorious, some less so. In the 17th century, the once grand chapter hall was reduced to a storage facility. In Napoleontic times, the Prinsenhof was a military barracks and the chapter hall and the cellar below were its powder magazine. The vaulted space that is the ‘Nonnerie’ now first became a lunchroom in 1977. At the time, the Prinsenhof was the venue of a prestigious antiques fair and an additional facility was needed to provide its visitors with coffee and snacks. Today, the ‘Nonnerie’ serves both copious and light lunches, High Teas and various snacks as well as fresh coffee and tea or refreshing cold drinks. You can enjoy all of this inside or, weather permitting, on our romantic garden terrace. The ‘Nonnerie’ also often hosts private functions. These range from intimate family lunch or dinner parties to anniversaries, weddings, receptions, academic or business presentations, vernissages and similar events. De Nonnerie is gelegen onder de kapittelzaal van het voormalig klooster dat toebehoorde aan vrouwelijke derde orde van St. Fransciscus met als beschermheilige St. Agatha. In de zeventiende eeuw werd de kapittelzaal een pakhuis. Toen Het Prinsenhof als kazerne in gebruik was werd de kapittelzaal en De Nonnerie ingericht als magazijn. De Nonnerie is in 1977 als lunchroom ingericht. Tijdens de toenmalige antiekbeurs in het Prinsenhof was meer behoefte aan een lunchgelegenheid waar koffie/thee en broodjes verkocht werden. Tegenwoordig worden in De Nonnerie uitgebreide lunchmaaltijden, koffietafels, buffetten en High Tea geserveerd. Ook is De Nonnerie vaak in gebruik voor recepties, huwelijksfeesten, vergaderingen en bijeenkomsten of gewoon voor een kopje koffie. Bij mooi weer kunt u genieten van de rust op ons romantisch tuinterras.
